I have a Wii modded with a d2ckey that was done years ago.
I recently started using it more and using backup Isos burnt to DVD-Rs and playing them in the Wii.

Long story short some of the dvd-Rs i inserted prompted to update when i attempt to play the game.

Should I update directly or is there a sort of custom firmware I should download and install?
If so how do i download and install, it has been awhile. should it be 4.2 or another?

please help I'd like to play the new games but would hate to lose all the other backups.

Your fine to update from the disks so long as they match the region of your wii.

Also, if you update to 4.2 then you wont be able to play our of region games from the disk channel but will need to install homebrew to play them.

ok i'm such a scared noob on the wii.
so if the disk matches the region(usa) then update. what is i used region frii?
now i have never used hbc to play games on this hard modded wii before, would i play the games that currently work on hbc or just the ones that require the update.

If you have a US wii and a US game disk then you can let it update. If it doesn't match the region (even if you ran region frii on it) then don't let it update.

Since you're hardmodded then you only need to use homebrew to run out of region games. Follow one of larry's softmod guides to install the necessary files.
