what do I need to do to convert the file so it can go on the SD card. Because I would be pissed if something happened to my file or the wii

If it's on your computer you can check by reading the file name. The format will be an extension, it might say "Data.bin" or ".sav" after the name.

how do I get the file from the wii to the computer so I can check the file type

go to the data management in the wii system menu. then click on the save, and save to sd card. done deal.

Try using the savegame extractor/manager application:
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Savegame_Manager

If Monster Hunter 3 won't copy normally, as is with New Super Mario Bros, You can use this app to copy game saves that won't normally copy.

basically every app from wiibrew requires HBC. so if you don't have the wii softmodded, now is the time to do so.
