I'm one of the many people having trouble with getting Monster Hunter to work, so I've been trawling through any wii hacking forum I can find to sort it out, and one thing I've been noticing is people are giving a lot of confusing and incomplete information. This is why I thought I'd make a little tutorial so people can get the info from just one location.

Now I'm not really part of the scene and I don't understand many of the things I'm going to talk about but I'm basically just collating and consolidating things I've read, written by much smarter people. There is however a chance I'll make some factual or just conceptual mistakes so before people take my word on this it'd be nice if someone more "in the know" could tell me if it checks out.
In any case, and as always when following a guide, READ THE WHOLE GUIDE CAREFULLY BEFORE STARTING. This is my first wii modding guide of any sort, and I don't take any responsibility for things that may go wrong from following it.

What apparently goes wrong with MHTri

From what I gather, the whole "Begin the game" freeze bug is caused by Monster Hunter Tri only running on IOSs installed on a 37 base. This problem appears to also affect other games like some music games (such as Guitar Hero 5)

Possible Solutions

If you're loading the game from a USB memory stick/HD, the easiest solution seems to be installing Hermes v4, (you can follow this guide here: http://gwht.wikidot.com/hermes-ios222-223 ). After installing IOSs 222 and 223, on the instructed guides, when using USB Loader, it is essential to force the Loader to use one of these IOSs in the Loader's settings. Many people forget this then complain that the fix didn't work.

If you are loading the game from a DVD (using loaders like Neogamma), it gets trickier, because you can't force them to use any IOS besides 249. Simply put, the easiest way seems to be to reinstall IOS 249 to base 37. You can follow this guide here: http://gwht.wikidot.com/ios249, but at step 10. when it says "Select IOS57 v5661 for the base IOS version with D-pad left/right and push A", select IOS37 instead.
Please note, If your Wii is not connected to the Internet you will also have to change step 4.. Where it says "copy IOS57-64-v5661.wad to sd:/" you will need to get the IOS37-64-vxxxx.wad somewhere and download it to your SD card prior to installation. I am not sure what version you should use, help anyone?

Potential problems
This is where it gets muddy for me. Changing your IOS249 base to 37 has, apparently, some drawbacks.
It conflicts with Wad Manager 1.4, which could make installing wads (channels, such as with Wii Ware games) a hassle, although apparently using YAWMM (http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=210290) will sidestep this issue.
Also, running 249 on base 57 is apparently much better for people using USBs to load their games, since it enables faster memory access.
And finally, base 38 seems to be the most stable and widely used base for 249, and so changing it to 37 may entail in other potential conflicts down the line.

Some people seem to dodge this by setting IOS249 to 37 and IOS250 to 38 then running apps such as Wad Manager from 250, to avoid the conflict. Others suggest installing Hermes' IOS222 (from the guide at the top) to base 38 and running WAD Manager off that. However I have also heard that this may be risky, so until someone who understands this a lot more than me gives it an OK, I suggest you all stay away from these solutions.

In the end we're left with a trade-off. You'll be able to run MHTri and some other games you couldn't before, but later on you might find yourself having to reinstall 249 again, not something you want to be doing every other week.

So, can any of you mod wizards tell me if this all makes sense and if there's a prefered solution, or if it's all dangerous crap and I should delete it post-haste?

regardless, you should have hermes 222/223 AND cIOSX_rev19 installed together. if IOS249 doesn't work, then go to either 222, 223, 250.

as for the wad manager issue, use IOS222. eversince i installed cIOSX, IOS249 won't install wads, but after finding out online that 222 works, there's no more wad manager problem.

This seems a little too risky, and I don't want to screw up my Wii, or make any of the other games I have not work anymore. I'll just put MH Tri on the shelf for now, and then maybe try to fix things if other new games have similar problems.

I recently softmodded my wii and I finally got cfg usb loader to work using the usb drive to load homebrew and the SD card to load the wbfs file system because my usb drives wont detect wbfs file system. Now whenI switch ios249 to base 37 I cant get any game to start up. I have to switch it back to base57 to play games again. When I load ios222, ios223, ios224 i get a freezed screen at loading ios 2## (fat). I dont know if this has to do with me using a SD card. I remember when first modding the wii i had a 256mb sd card so I was able to have boot mii installed at boot2 but now it doesnt appear in the homebrew menu. I read that it shouldnt be a problem. Away from that I cant figure out why my usb flash sticks (wbfs) are not detected.

That issue with Wad Manager is only for those loading from CD and installing 249 base to 37 ?
