To be honest, it certainly sounds like a brick. My Wii is currently bricked and the same exact thing happens. Apparently the Wii doesn't like when you mess around with Cios since that is what caused my brick.
I turn it on, I get a black screen but the fan and the light are working. BootMii works but HBC gives an error and the Wii menu leads to nothing. I have no nand backup so I'm pretty much screwed. When my friend lends me New Super Mario Bros I'm gonna try to run the update with SaveMiiFrii(Opened up GCN controller). If it works I will let you know.

Is a 15 dollar third party controller worth sacrificing to unbrick your Wii? I'd say hell fricken yes. i=If anything just buy a crappy Gamestop one and do it that way. It isn't permanent by the way, you can easily put the GCN controller back together if you wanted to.

No I'm saying just go to Gamestop and buy a piece of crap third party controller just to do it if you're afraid of opening your first part controller. Any controller will work but you have to be able to press all 4 directions on the D-pad. I've already done it with a first party GCN controller and it works fine as long as all directions are pressed.

Try holding down the reset button while powering up the Wii. If you installed a pre-loader app it might be able to restore your Wii.
Wii 4.1U Wiikey2
DSL - CycloDS + 3-in-1 EZ FlashV lite

sounds like a black menu wii brick situation which is fixable but only with the right files and methods. Only preloader and savefrii or savemii will fix this. Been tested and done before on 2 of my wiis.

well first you have to have the product SaveMii. Once you have it ill explain on how to go on about saving your wii. I am not just going to write a huge tutorial on it and expect everyone to have the required materials.

when nothing pops up when you turn the wii on, try pressing power, reset, eject all at same time. this will work if you have preloader. then go into preloader settings and choose IOS 36 for IOS, and make sure the top option is preloader if not already. this should fix it. THE THREE BUTTON TRICK WORKS. EVERYONE SAYS JUST HOLD RESET, IT DOESN'T WORK. this just recently happened to me, and i was freaking.

All is right with world now and i am currently running my soft modded wii no problems.
