Hey everyone,

I did a fair amount of reading but I'm getting conflicting posts some saying 4.2u on the newest wiis have killed a lot of functionality and others saying there are workarounds.

I just bought a wii for my dad as a Christmas present and it's an LU40 with 4.2u. I followed the tutorial in the main sticky but got stuck at the part where I install the homebrew menu as I was not prompted to boot anything, there was just a box on the screen with a "?" where the channel would be.

Ahould I take this Wii back and try to get a different model or can this model be soft modded with full functionality?

If I go back and get another, what versions should I stear away from. I can go back to fry's and pick my own console out.

Thanks everyone, really appreciate your help.

Read the guide again.

What does it say for 4.2 firmware systems?

Sorry larrylje, I really have spent a lot of time reading. I'll go through the tut again. There is a huge difference studying something and trying it out for fear of bricking a system... I just wanted everyone's take on the system version, because I'm totally new with wiis. Have plenty of experience with other consoles.

Didn't mean to waste your time and I take your comment to mean, keep the system, and go for it.

The system can be modded.

Read the first sentence of the guide.

I have successfully modded the 4.2u with the exception of adding pre/priiloader as it returned an error of not being able to retrieve ticket, or something like that.

I think the the link in the guide is out of date for those of us with newer systems. I ran into problem after problem with that tutorial considering some of the links or files are older and outdated. After another good 8 hours of reading and sifting through hundreds of posts, I found a great tutorial that is actually maintained, updated, and not abandoned by the original author. The tutorial I followed is this one which was excellent-

.

I hope that helps people out there with the newer consoles or people who have updated to 4.2.

p.s. If anyone can help me hurdle the priiloader issue, I'd be very grateful.

What version of preloader or Priiloader were you trying to install?
