Your textOKay, I don't even have a Wii, but I was thinking of getting one just to play Zelda Wind Waker and Twilight princess, plus all the old n64 and Snes roms. I was looking at just getting one second hand if I could.

I know pretty much nothing about Nintendo wii mods, so I was hoping someone could clear some things up for me:

I've heard that you can soft mod the Wii's withouth even opening them up. Is it a difficult procedure at all? and can it be done with any nintendo wii?

if I get one and soft mod it, will I be able to play Wind Waker, which is a gamecube game I believe?

And the soft mod does allow backups to be played, right?

cheers.

It is pretty simple if you can follow directions.

Yes you can play Windwaker. You will need a Gamecube Controller which you can buy pretty easy at Gamestop stores or even Walmart online.

Yes a softmod can play backup games.

Opening the wii is not necessary to mod. And a full softmod can be done very easily with any wii. It can be done in as little as 15 minutes if you know what you're doing.

You can mod the wii using nothing but an SD card. That's the only required piece of hardware. Most people go further and play their games off a USB hard drive or flash drive, but theres still no other hardware required aside from the USB drive and SD card.

Additionally, if you get a newer wii (made in the last year or so) then you will likely need to go the USB route as the newer drives cannot read burned disks. An older wii can play both wii and gamecube backups from disks.

Gamecube games cannot currently be run from USB, so if you get one of these newer wii's then you wont be able to play gamecube backups (there is a homebrew program that may do this someday, but it is still in an early beta and runs poorly) Wii games run fine from USB, better than from disk even.

As for how to mod the wii, there are many guides out there. Which one to use depends on what firmware you have. Different firmwares need different exploits and may require a few extra steps. Personally I like this guide but there are tons of good ones out there. That one is no better or worse than many of them.

Thanks for the replies. I know I must seem like a noob and all.

Hmmm, the fact that if I get a newer one and can't play gamecube games is important to me. Man, I so want the Zeldas lol.

What if I actually bought Wind Waker? Would it play that then, even if it was soft modded?

Original gamecube game disks will run fine on any wii version, softmodded or not. Softmodded wiis can also play import gamecube games, something non-modded wiis cannot do.

So I can also buy the original of twilight princess if I wanted to and it'd be all good? I think I may as well get one.

I rang up EB games and they said they have pre-owned ones for $150 AUD. That's pretty damn sweet I think and cheaper than ebay. Plus, I think you get a warranty as well.

Don't mean to keep going on about it, but will there be any problem soft-modding if the 2nd hand wii I get is fully updated or anything?

You think so? It seems very cheap to me, considering some brand new games themselves cost around $120
