Hi Forum

I'm new to downloading games on the Wii console (I have been downloading pc games for a number of years and I have some understanding of the process) and I just wanted to know, what risks that are associated with downloading games and installing software on the Wii and how to make these games work. It's an expensive machine so I don't want to wreck it :)

I'm using the PAL version of the machine (already downloaded COD5 for the console and I'm excited to play it) and I haven't got a mod chip. I'm not brave enough to install one.

I've heard that you don't need a mod chip but something called HomeBrew.

Can someone please make me a step by step guide to make these games work and tell me what risks are involved in doing this to the machine.

Thanks in advance

There are a ton of great guides out there. Personally I like this one but it is by no means the only one you can use.

Risk of bricking the console is minimal so long as you're careful and follow all the directions. Furthermore, one of the first steps in most guides is backing up the NAND, which will let you recover from most problems even if you do mess something up.

One final word of advice. If you have a new wii (from within the last year or so) then you probably won't be able to play backups from burned disks. In that case you'll need to install a USB loader to play the games from a USB hard drive or flash drive.

Installing the loader on your wii after completing that softmodding guide is literally as simple as copying a single folder to your SD card. Formatting the drive and installing your games on there is a little more complex, but still very simple. Information about USB loaders can be found here.

Thanks for the guides... They helped a lot

One question:

My Wii version is 4.3E (if I remember correctly) but am I still able to play burned disks with that version, or is it out of the question? :)

You can play burned disks with any firmware, it's the hardware that's the problem.

There have been at least 6 different revisions to the wii's DVD drive over the years. You can go here and enter your wii's serial number to get an idea of what model you have.

If you have a D3-2 or D4 drive then you have to use a USB loader to mod. The D3 drives and all earlier drive versions can read backup disks.
