New Wii - Softmod Prep Questions

Hello everyone,

I just picked up my new Wii today (LU39) and have been spending quite a bit of time reading up on performing a softmod. I haven't even plugged in the Wii yet, but wanted to get opinions on the ideal way to go about doing this.

1. I plan to immediately update it to 4.1. Good idea?
2. What SD card is everyone using? Are there specific ones to avoid? I'm thinking a 4GB should be good enough?
3. I plan to use a USB Loader. Will the Western Digital 500GB Passport Elite drive work? It's the one without an external power source.
4. Should I get a Gamecube controller for part of the install process? Some guides reference using it instead of the buttons on the Wii.
5. From what I've read, the USB drive will be formatted in it's own file system. Will I be able to make backups of those backups? (In case the external harddrive dies.)

Follow the 4.1 FIRMWARE SOFTMOD GUIDE I have linked in my sig.

There are USB Loader links available at the end of the guide. The first SD/USB Loader link has a USB Device compatibility chart that you can look to see if your USB device is compatible.

i tryed that link with the sd card it wont boot from the sd
