i just got this wii and it came preloaded with 4.2u fw, and i followed the 4,2 guide to a tee, with no errors. then i tried to play a backup wii title and i got a disc read error. i am using verbatims at 1x burn dvd-r. even my gamecube backups will not read either, i konw they work because my gamecube plays them flawlessly. i am at a loss, i also cannot get the dvdx to appear on my wii screen, i don't think it actually installed correctly. i am afraid that i have too new a version of wii to successfully softmod it... if anyone else is experiencing this or knows of a solution i would appreciate it..

My friend's wii has the same issue. It was updated to OFW 4.2 and after that i tried to soft mod it the exact same way i softmodded mine. The only difference is that his wont play backups, but mine does. And I checked and he doesnt have the chipset that makes dvd backups unreadable either........

it's because the new wii's can't read backup discs your gonna have to use a usb loader to put the iso's on

if you read the guide to a T you would have read the warning under NeoGamma addressing this issue.

They are hackable.

Use a USB Loader to play the backup games.

I think it is pointless to use backup disc even if you have a drive that will read them.

By the time you spend money on media to burn them, you could probably have spent the money on a 300GB - 500GB hard drive.

Then you wouldn't have to worry about bad burns or scratching/breaking the disc.

Plus you don't have keep changing disc every time you want to play a different game. All games are stored right there at your fingertips.

If you want to play from disc then I would buy a drive that will play backup disc and just change the drives out.

iagree with you and by the way i successfully installed usb loader and it read my 1tb western digital external, and i was able to play my iso's from there, and it loaded nice and quick.. i guess i just got frustrated when the discs didn't read, but it ended up a positive in the end, thanks for you're input, i value your expertise larry.. one more question for you though, is there a program that will load gamecube iso's??? thanks in advance
