Hi all,
After about 2 years of not touching my Wii, I've decided to fire it back on. It's at my parents home so I won't go get it before this weekend when we'll visit but I have a couple of questions.
I have Wiikey installed on it and was able to play my backups on it.
I havent touched/updated the console for 2+years, would I need to do anything for it to work with newer backups? Is it safe to update the dashboard (I presume some updates came in the past 2 years...)? Do I have to update anything related to Wiikey?
Thanks!

unless I am mistaken you can safely update to the latest firmware if you have a modchip and all you want to do is play games.
if you want to install the homebrew channel, or a usb loader, then you want to read around first before updating all the way. Their are probably guides that would hook you up regardless but it is usually easier to upgrade from a lower firmware and then just install the separate CIOS files that each new game requires.
again, if you just want to play backups from disc with the wiikey updating is safe. Just remember homebrew options become more difficult and possible limited at first with the highest available firmware.
I reccommend only updating if you have to have via a game disc. Make SURE it is from your region before updating. Wiikey will happily load pal discs with pal updates and if your not aware it will mess up the wii menu..
found another post where some guy mentioned losing region free capability if you update past 4.2U
Saw another one that said AVOID 4.3U if you want a softmod of region free capability.
You should read through some of the posts on the main page.

Thanks for your reply.
After reading your answer, I went to read a bit more about homebrew chan andusb loader and i'd love to install these.
The only ways to install the homebrew channel was to have one of 3 games that I don't have. Is there any other way? You say to read posts on the main page here. Can you link to this page?
*edit*
Ok. So on the official website of homebrew channel, it seems to hint that without these games, I won't be able to use the exploit.
But on what of the sub pages, I found the following:
If you are on 4.1 or less:
What to download
BannerBomb. Get aad1f_v108.zip from this page.
If the above page is down, it is mirrored here.
HackMii Installer v0. or later from this page.
Installation procedure
If your SD card has an sd:/private directory, rename it to something else (e.g., privateold)
Rename or remove sd:/boot.dol and/or sd:/boot.elf if they exist.
Unzip the contents of aad1f_v108.zip into the sd:/ root directory
Thus, you should now have a file at sd:/private/wii/title/aktn/content.bin
Unzip HackMii Installer and copy boot.elf to the root directory of the SD card (sd:/)
Press (Wii), Data Management, Channels, SD.
Read this step carefully. It does not mean you should go the SD card channel menu
A dialog should pop up saying "Load boot.elf?".
If not, download other BannerBomb versions from here and try again until one works.
Select "Yes"
Follow the remaining instructions in the Homebrew Channel steps.
After installing the HBC, delete the private directory you created, and rename the old one back if you already had one.
**********
Is this valid! I don't want to brick my console or anything. I'm on firmware 3.3 so I should fall within this...

You only need 1 of the 3 games if your on firmware 4.3. So yes if you have 3.3 firmware you can use bannerbomb to install HBC/Bootmii. Make sure you download the proper bannerbomb for 4.1 firmware and below.
HERE is a softmod guide for 4.2 systems and below.

Thanks! I installed the homebrew channel and I can see it on my Wii menu.
But when I enter this channel, there's nothing in it? Just bubbles going up... On the page you link, it says to launch the Multi Mod Manager and other things but I have nothing.,..

I went to sleep on it. It was late and I started being a noob and missing instructions! Sorry about this.
So apparently, I downloaded the homebrew alone with no apps added.
Can I reinstall everything using the link you gave me (the MMM file)? Even if I installed it already, would doing the steps again with the new files do any bad?

Everything you need to know is in the guide I linked. So just follow it.
Chapter 1 of the guide and Chapter 2 of the guide are totally different. So in the end after following Chapter 1 steps (to install HBC/Bootmii) your going to delete all the files on the SD Card and replace them with the Chapter 2 softmod pack files.
This is not hard to do if you read it a few times and follow the steps word for word.

I would recommend the softmod as it allows use of a portable hard drive to store and launch games. The wii will still play games via the modchip if you run them from the Disc Channel. It will only use the softmod when you launch games via usb loader or via neogamma or other backup manager.
Unless you install cioscorp which I would not recommend. I cant speak for the guide as I softmodded my stuff a long time ago but if Larrylje gave the link I am sure it is a good guide. He seems to know his stuff and always helps.
Good Luck - remember to make a nand backup first (i'm sure the guide will mention this)
