Concerning 4.2 updating for Modchip users and a possible fix:
Yes 4.2 will let you play the game if you have a hardmodded console, and yes it will also kill your out-of-region compatibility. The only thing that needs updating on your consoles is a single IOS file - NOT the system menu.
Like nightstah mentioned we do have a guide by mauifrog on restoring 4.1 that works and is a very minimal softmod - nothing gets installed to the system except factory IOS and the system menu - No HBC. But it's more effort than you guys need to go through unless you've already updated to 4.2.
Here's a similar process, borrowing a little from mauifrog's page, you can take that will let you install IOS56 without installing any softmod programs like HBC and without updating to 4.2, and should allow you to play SMG2:
- You'll need to put these files on an SD card (not SDHC)
- If you get any errors backup and format your card with this tool.
- Extract Dop-Mii_v12_CB2_BB1.zip to sd:\
- Insert the SD card, turn on the console, and DOP-Mii should load.
- If it doesn't, navigate to Options > Data > Channels and select the SD card there then load file.
Select Install IOS36 with fakesign
Download from NUS if the wii is online
Install from SD for offline install, and extract these wads to sd:\wad
IOS15-64-v257.zip
IOS15-64-v523.zip
IOS36-64-v3351.zip
Be sure to apply all 3 patches to ios36.
Select IOS36, press A
Select IOS, BC, MIOS and press A
Select IOS56 (v5405) and Download from NUS
Install from SD for offline install, and extract this wad to sd:\wad
IOS56-64-v5405.wad
You don't need to apply patches on this one, but you can safely if you want.
After it's finished press Home to exit and reboot your console, removing the SD card. If you get a DSI error during this process it's okay, just hold power on the console until it shuts off then try again.

I know many of you are against softmodding, but right now this is the best we've got to get you by until your modchip manufacturers come out with a firmware update. I'll never recommend updating to 4.2 to play a single game, because it'll kill your out-of-region compatibility (amongst other anti-homebrew features), and without that update from your manufacturers this is the absolute least amount of softmodding that is required to install that IOS.
