I just bought a Wii yesterday (Dec 26, 2010) and I want to mod. I haven't decided if I want to softmod or hardmod yet because of the information in the Wii forums..I cannot find a definitive source for information. I found one forum that HAD a tutorial in it but was removed earlier this year.
Thanks!

You want to softmod. Modchips are simply not an option anymore as softmodding is cheaper, FAR easier, and gives you more options such as installing wiiware games, playing classic roms through emulators and playing your games from a USB drive instead of burning disks.
As for a guide, I'm not sure how you can't find any, there are tons out there. Personally I like this one but it is by no means the only good one to use.
Just make sure you follow every step carefully. I can't tell you how many times someone comes on here saying 'I followed a guide but it didn't work and I have no idea why!' And we troubleshoot for awhile only to find out that they skipped parts of the guide because they 'didn't think it was all that important.'

Newer systems can not play backup disc (its a limitation with the new DVD Roms in the system). So you will more then likely have to softmod and use a USB Loader and USB HDD to play your games off it.
If the firmware is on 4.3 then use this guide HERE.
If it is 4.2 or below then use this guide HERE.

Thank you so so much!!!! I'm extremely grateful for your replies!
I think mine says 4.3u...would that be the same as the aforementioned 4.3?
Also, I 'updated' the wii software this morning so I could get online with it..will this be a problem? If not, thats great, I will follow the reccomended tutorials to a T!

it won't be a problem now, since you're updated. but later on, you will need to update the shop channel manually when a new one is released.

(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
