hi all,
I had my wii modded about last year, and all was well
but recently, no burned discs my brother or I have burned are working
2 problems that we think might be causing this, but both have something that prove us wrong
firstly, we think it might be the lens/spinner inside the wii, because the new discs, upon insert, start making clicking sounds and the wii stops spinning for a few seconds, starts, then freezes
however, this is wrong because we recently tested an actual wii disc, which did and still does work
secondly, we think it might be the isos,
but we've been checking torrent comments, and they seem to work fine for other downloaders
but the strangest thing, there are 2 discs that we burned a few months back that still work with no problem
can someone help?
PS: this is a modchip we use
and yes, we are burning at 4X

There are several theories to your problem:
-You could be using the wrong DVD media (Always use DVD-R & not DVD+R)
-You could be using a less than cooperative brand of DVD (Verbatim, TDK & Sony work good)
-A writing error may be occurring while the DVD is burning (Try burning even slower still, e.g 2x)
-You may have edited the ISO in someway. If so, in what way have you modified it?
-The game may require a system update. What games are giving you problems & What is your current firmware version?
-Your wii may have not been modified completely or correctly.
If one of these theories seems most likely to you, please let me know.

Usually the package the DVDs came in will say "DVD-R" or "DVD+R". Sometimes the Disc itself will be labelled "DVD-R" or "DVD+R". Also, if you insert the DVD into a computer the computer will usually tell you what it is. It may say "Blank DVD+RW" or something along those lines.

DVD+R is the completely wrong one to use. Start using DVD-R immediately.
In regards to your other question, Wii's only read DVD-Rs, they can be modified to read other DVDs, but that can get really complex(With Wiis, you want to try and keep it as simple as possible) . Any DVD-R, including Dual-Layer can be read. Anything else, won't. Simple as that.

Hmmm...I have a theory...If your wii plays some DVD+R and not others, & it is equipped with a modchip, the most likely answer is that your wii's firmware is either 4.2 or 4.3, & this has caused your modchip to lose it's region-free capability, allowing it to play only backups that match your wii's region. For example, if your wii is American (NTSC-U), it won't play European/Australian games (PAL) or Japanese games (NTSC-J), or vice-versa. The DVDs that are not working are probably ones that are from a different region.
To check your wii's firmware version, enter the Wii Settings menu from The System Menu & it will be displayed in the top-right corner of the screen.
If your wii is below 4.2, the only other explanation would be that the games require updates, however I have a feeling I'm right since so many of your DVDs don't work.

problem though, the wii settings menu doesn't like my wii, cause it says something about the page being unavailable
also, how would I fix the region thing?

actually I think the region thing wasn't the problem, because before this started I had a perfectly good working copy of tatsunoko VS capcom CGoH which I loved to play, plus my star wars force unleashed copies haven't came out, using the same type of disc

tbh, you're better off using a usb loader and hard drive. i've been running the japanese tatsunoko vs capcom AND the US tatsunoko vs capcom on the hard drive with no problems. didn't even have to touch any settings to boot the japanese version.
as for you being not able to log into the settings, you semi-bricked your wii. you need to reinstall the correct region firmware.

how do I upgrade back to NTSC?
I think it was the update that CGoH installed that semi-bricked the thing
also, when I got my parents to have the wii modded I didn't know about USB loader or soft modding

the best way to softmod without knowing is using an original game and exploit. lego indiana jones and indiana pwns exploit will work on all regions.
bannerbomb can work too, but you would have to try different ones. also, if you were on 4.3, there is no bannerbomb for it.

The only way to bypass the 4.2 update's added security is to completely softmod the wii.

wasn't there some way to patch the isos to NTSCU region?
I would soft mod, but the problem is its already hard modded, and the fact that wii menus aren't exactly blind friendly

you can softmod just fine with a modchip. Any games you load from backup disc through the disc channel would use the mod chip and any games loaded via usb loader, or backup dics played through a backup launcher channel like neogamma would be using the softmod.
I have a mod chipped wii that I softmodded specifically to make use of the usb loaders.
You need to softmod to allow jap games to play, and to correct the semi brick you did by updating your FW with an out of region game disc.
If you just want to fix the semi brick you can upgrade your firmware to 4.3u via the wifi service built into the wii.
Later on if you decide to think about softmodding again to get back your ability to play jap and other out of region games you can softmod and downgrade your 4.3 FW.
if you really want to play those out of region games you should try and start the softmod now while you are still below 4.3u -
to softmod the 4.3u FW you need 1 of 3 specific ORIGINAL WII games. With 4.2u or below all you need is an SD card and an internet connection so softmodding on 4.2u and below is a little easier and cheaper unless you already own one of the three needed original games.
This guide for softmodding works fine for both 4.2u and below and/or 4.3u
