problems with newer games 3.4u wasabi DX

have a hardmodded wii with wasabi dx solderless. first 15-20 games worked fine, having problems with a lot of PAL games(not all) even if patched. Also, a lot of newer games are coming up with disc read errors either immediately after clicking start or a little into the game. Most of the time it is just a black screen after selecting start in the disc channel. Do I need to update to 4.1 to play these? I got the mod chip so I didn't have to get into a lot of softmod stuff(less complicated for the girlfriend).
Also, i know i should do HBC before updating to 4.0, but is there anything else I should do for sure before the update?
And, I can just turn off the brick blocker on something like NSMB to get to 4.1 right?
