1) chipped my Wii with WiiFree in summer '07. It was a decent chip at the time, can't be updated.

2) Haven't touched the Wii much since '08, recently brought it out of storage.

3) Did all the steps to soft-mod it so I could play new games. Seems to be working fine. I got e.g. Mario Kart to work after doing the mod.dl thing with WiiScrubber and Generic Wii Patcher.

4) However, I'm sick of dealing with the #001 error. E.g. Punch Out gives me the #001 error even though Generic Wii Patcher claims there is no #001 protection in the file.

5) Would I be better off cutting out the WiiFree chip and just letting the SoftMod do its thing? This is what the #001 is detecting, right, the physical WiiFree chip and not the SoftMod?

6) Is there any real risk to pulling the WiiFree out? I didn't put it in myself but watched the guy do it... it seemed to be floating above all the circuity and I imagine I could just cut the wires he used to solder it and have the thing out. Right or wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help

I haven't had to deal with the 001 error in awhile, but if I recall correctly, the softmod should be able to bypass it without removing the modchip.

I know for sure that using a USB loader will prevent you from getting that error, since it bypasses the entire drive mechanism.

Failing that, snipping the wires on the chip will easily let you remove it. If you want to get fancy, you can snip wire 1 in this diagram and add a small switch outside the wii that will let you turn the modchip on and off whenever you like.

Okay, I definitely need to get into USB loading. I haven't even touched it. That would also help me with the laser errors I'm geting because my Wii is banged up.

Is there a best tutorial on how to load ISOs from USB? There's a lot of information out there and I don't wanna follow the wrong advice.

Thanks very much for your help!
