Whats the best these days?
IS it even worth bothering with a hard mod chip?
Must admit I'm a bit scared of softmod in case it goes wrong and bricks my wii.
Any comments?

Softmodding is the way to go. It has more options and its easier than modchips as well.
You can mess things up doing it, but if you're careful and follow each step then the chances of breaking anything are minimal. Probably equivalent to the odds of breaking something like installing a modchip, lol.

Modchips are fast becoming outdated, softmods are a much better way to go for many reasons:
-It's Free
-It's Easier, Simpler & Faster
-You get more Brick Protection Options, such as Priiloader & Bootmii
-You get more chance of recovery should you brick
-You can bypass System Updates & play new games
-Many extras (e.g Changing Game Content, USB Loaders etc)

Thanks for the reply.. now if I am a fairly new person to this soft mod concept.. CAN it really damage my Wii beyond repair? Or is it no different than say messing aroudn with a FTA system for satellie I've done that.. I'm not a total newbie when it comes to this stuff
Also for copying wii games? any recommendations?
Thanks

Softmodding doesn't harm the console, the only way it would cause harm would be if you did something wrong like uninstalling/installing the wrong IOS during the process or updating the console afterwards. If you do everything correctly & follow a reliable guide there shouldn't be any risks.
Once you've softmodded you can rip(copy) your original games to a Hard Drive & play them on your wii through a USB Loader.

In my opinion all pay sites that claim they have software that can mod your system are a scam. All they do is either provide you the homebrew (which is free) or guide you to places to download the free homebrew. I would donate to the creators of homebrew that make loading backups possible, instead of paying a pay site that leaches off those that create the homebrew.
The link that 12137 provided is pretty much the same info/homebrew you would get, that a pay site would give you.
Just go to the linked guide 12137 provided and read the guide a few times. It is kind of hard to mess it up if you take your time and be patient through the steps. Those that rush and hurry through it are the ones that usually miss a step and have an issue.
