I followed the NEW AND IMPROVED WII SOFTMOD GUIDE ! thread and have successfully completed the installation of everything except the optional parts. I was only able to install bootmii as a cIOS, and lacking a gamecube controller right now I am unable to navigate the bootmii menu (the power, reset & eject buttons will not, I tried). I have been searching and reading as much as possible but I have a few questions now because a lot of information I am seeing is for previous versions of the Wii firmware (I am running 4.1U per the guide).

Being unable to use bootmii at the moment, should I install preloader? What hacks should I be using aside from the skip update hack?

I want to play wii backups (NTSC only), what precautions do I need to take? Do I need to patch ISOs at all or install anything special? Should I run the IOS downgrader part of the guide to fix the Trucha Signed exploit (still foggy on what exactly that is, but I believe I read that it was a way people were patching their ISOs, not sure if it still something you would need with current backups)?

Until I get a gamecube controller and use bootmii, what can I do to prevent bricking my system?

Yes install Preloader if Bootmii is installed as an IOS. You can use whatever hacks you want.

If your playing games the same region as yours there is nothing really to worry about.

I would run the IOS Downgrader. it won't hurt anything if you do.

Again Preloader can help recover most brick issues if you install it.
