Hey guys,
I couldnt seem to find any tutorials on softmodding a Wii with 3.1 firmware. Ive got a PAL wii here, and it has the Hombrew channel installed (probably not the latest one), and 3.1 firmware.
What would be the best way to softmod this wii? Should i upgrade to the latest firmware and follow a tute? would that screw with the homebrew channel?
I havent softmodded before, but would be confident to follow a tutorial etc.
Apologies for noobness, just a bit lost. Any help is greatly appreciated :)

"IF YOUR WII IS 3.4 OR BELOW AND ALREADY SOFTMODED (with cIOS36_rev8 or higher and homebrew channel) ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS UPDATE TO 4.0/4.1 USING THE NINTENDO SERVERS (how you normally would update). THEN INSTALL THE IOS60PATCHED.WAD. IF YOU WANT THE TRUCHA BUG FIXED THEN RUN IOS DOWNGRADER UNDER THE EXTRA STEPS SECTION! "
Its not already softmodded, but has the HBC. So this doesnt matter? i just update via wifi, and instal ios60patched, then ios downgrader?

no. Having the homebrew channel installed is not a softmod. You need the HBC installed to run the wadmanager that installs the cIOS.
Just follow the new and improved softmod guide step by step and when you are done, you will have 4.1 FW from your region, and be able to play backups and install wad files that contain VC and Wii Ware games. It will also make sure you have the newest version of the homebrew channel installed. If you really want you can follow the guide and skip the first steps as they just install the HBC which you already have. The rest of the steps are the installation of the cIOS files and such and you cannot skip those.
I also recommend following the guide at the end of this guide that walks you through loading backups from the disc channel. It will link you to a guide that walks you through installing bootmii and making a nand backup in the event you brick your wii. You also will not need to use the backup launcher to load backups as they will load throught the normal disc channel like original games.
I have followed the guide twice on vigin wii's one that was 3.2u and another that was 3.4u and both had HBC installed but no softmod and the guides worked like a charm.
Give them a try and let us know.

Hey thanks man. I tried it last night, and it worked no problems :)
I did the extra steps on that page, but clicked the link to the next guide to get it working from the disc channel. It said make sure i had CIOSrev7/8 or something, i wasnt sure so i just left it. Been loading the games from the NEOGAMMER channel and works fine, so all good.
Thanks again man

good for you. Glad to hear it is all working.
Just so you know it said to make sure you have revision 7/8 or higher to use that guide, which you do, so you are safe to follow it even though backups run fine from the neogamma backup launcher.
Those extra steps in that guide also help you install preloader, and bootmii which protect against accidental system bricks.
I highly recommend looking into bootmii and preloader if you dont intend on following that guide and the guides it links to.

Ive heard of Bootmii, but not Preloader. Would i be able to just update the Homebrew channel, since that installs Bootmii and id be safe?
Or you reccomend doing the next guide?

the hackmii installer will give you bootmii. You can load it up the same way you loaded up the bannerbomb exploit when you followed the guide. Only instead of installing the HBC you can choose to install bootmii this time. DVDX is also available for install.
Try and install bootmii as boot2. If it installs ok, or tells you it can install to boot2 ok, you are good to go, Just install, and then run it to make a backup of your nand. You'll probably need to use a gamecube controller to use the bootmii menu. The wiimote doesnt work with bootmii.
If you can't install it as boot2 then you need preloader to be able to recover from a system brick. You can still make a backup of your nand via bootmii, but without preloader you will be unable to load bootmii if your wii gets bricked.
You can still install bootmii as an IOS, and that will be an option when bootmii tells you it cant install itself as boot2. Go ahead and install it as an IOS, and then follow the guide to get preloader installed. You can also just google pre-loader. I am sure you can install just that without actually doing the entire load backups from the disc channel.
At the bare minimum load up the hackmii installer and at least try and install bootmii as boot2.

Sweet, its actually my brothers wii. So ill grab his SD card, and load the hackmii installer for Bootmii and load that or Boot2 on for him. I remember seeing the option but skipping it from following the guide.
Thanks again ;)

Hey, sorry just a little confused. I thought i skipped bootmii and dvdx when i installed IOS35 from that guide, but i actually skipped Patchmii. So i installed that.. but dont think thats the same thing? i didnt get to choose a boot 2 or anything
I didnt use the bannerbomb exploit cause i already had the homebrew channel.
But i did download the hackmii thing, and renamed installer to boot.. but unsure how to load it on?

use the hackmii installer like i originally recommended. When it loads up, you can install bootmii. It is the easiest way to avoid making a mistake.
If you are not going to follow the recommendations, and instead do your own thing, dont be surprised when you have problems.
Go back to the new and improved softmod guide and follow the steps up to the point where you install HBC. Instead of choosing and installing HBC, choose bootmii and install as boot2.
Dont think about this anymore. Just follow the recommendation and you will be fine.

good deal. Now make go ahead and make a backup of your NAND for safekeeping. You can run bootloader from the HBC. When you attempt to exit out of the HBC you will see bootmii as an option.
If you didnt already make sure to install preloader since you had to install bootmii as IOS.
When you turn the wii on and hold reset it should load up preloader. From there you could force the HBC to run and from there you can load up bootmii. This is what you will need to do if you brick and need to recover since you installed bootmii as an IOS.
