I've softmodded my original Wii and made backups of the games my brother plays most (After losing SSBB because of cracking, I never let him touch the original discs again)
Though the softmod, I myself run emulators and all the games on The Homebrew Channel. Just recently, I started getting the black dots on the screen meaning that my graphics chip is dying. I just got an offer from Gamestop that if you trade in your old Wii with 2 controllers and $50, they will give you a brand new Black Wii with Wii Sports Resort and the Wii Motion Plus. Before I went ahead with the deal, I wanted to make sure that the new Wiis are hackable with the Homebrew Channel and have the ability to play burned games.

The new wii's are hackable but cannot read burned disks. They can still play backups though, you just need to install a USB loader once you complete the softmod and then you can play your backups from a USB drive.

Alright, I think I'll just head over for a used system. I hear the compatibility of a USB loader isn't as great as burned discs. It's also a lot easier to load up a burned disc than something from a USB hard drive for my brother and friends.
Is the ability to not read a burned disc a software/firmware limitation or the physical laser can't read it?

Compatibility with a USB loader is just as good as softmods, though some games need tricks to work. For example, metroid prime trilogy will crash if you try to load it normally. But the loader gives you the option to manually start any of the games individually, and they all work fine.
I find it much simpler to use the usb loader than digging through my burned disks and swapping disks all the time. You just select 'usb loader' from the main wii menu, it will bring you to a list of all the games you have on the drive and you pick one. They even have the boxart and everything.
And it is a physical limitation of the drive. Nintendo removed it's ability to read burned DVD's of any kind.

Make sure you remove your homebrew before trading in, they may not like it.

Couldn't I just swap lasers on the drive with one that is able to read burned media?

I don't think just switching the laser would work but I am pretty sure that just swapping the whole drive out will. It's a pretty simple process that I've done a couple times before.

Wouldn't swapping the whole drive would require the DVD drive circuit board to be swapped? I thought the DVD drives were linked to the system.

the chipset is what prevents burned discs from being read. so it doesn't matter if you do a laser swap; the wii chipset is still there.
and usb loader is superior to burned discs; faster loading, and no need to worry about burning coasters.

There is no modchip that bypasses that block?

I'll probably end up doing the trade. Do you think that's worth it now?

How do you tell if it's an old type? Isn't it something with the serial number beginning with LU?

forget getting a used one. why get used when new is readily available?
you basically lose one controller in the trade, but it's better than waiting to see if nintendo will fix the wii.

I got controllers, thats not a problem. I bought a lot of 5 "broken" ones from eBay and they all worked. I guess the guy had a broken Wii or didn't know how to sync them.
Nintendo won't fix my Wii, it's too old and I still like the idea of used. Used is $150 at Gamestop and I still get to keep my old Wii out of it. If I ever feel like, I'm sure I could sell my old one for $150 easily. I mean, the black dots aren't that noticeable, I'm just really picky.
But for softmodding, when tutorials say "don't downgrade LUxx" does that refer to the serial number?

Yes, its talking about the serial number. That's mostly said in older guides, because there was a time when softmodding a 4.2 wii required downgrading it to 4.1. That's not necessary anymore.

Ok. Have you noticed any performance increase/quietness or anything on the new Wiis?
