My son has recently had a wii for xmas ver 3.4E. I have tried to softmod to 4.1 using the the the tutorial from wiihacks.com but unfortunately i get to the point where installing the firmware 4.1 the screen freezes saying "initializing network please wait". If I reinstall again from the beginning will this have any effect on the wii.My wii has never been connected to the internet and I have checked the internet settings and I think they're switched off. I have also read that the 3.4E version can cause problems to update. Eventually I would like to load the games from an external HD via the USB. Any help would be appreciated especially a good tutorial.

Anyway, I don't know the guide you are referring to but I can say from your description that your wii needs to be online to use it. Additionally, there should be no need to reinstall from the beginning. Just pick it back up at whatever step failed.

If for some reason you can't get the wii to go online, then you can use this guide. It is the only one I know of that will let you do EVERYTHING on a wii without an internet connection.

You can use the 4.1 and below softmod guide in my sig. The softmod essential part you don't need WiFi. But if you want to do the extra steps you will need WiFi.
