I've been away from the wiikey situation for a long long while. I want to get super mario galaxy 2 and was wondering what do I need to be aware of? I have 4.1U installed but have no clue how to install homebrew. Also, should I be worried about buying new games with upgrades or can I still safely install upgrades from the internet?

We don't know what update Super Mario Galaxy 2 has, if any, yet. It may have a 4.2 update. When it is released & you do get, if it asks you to update, you won't want to do that because it will remove the region-free capability on your wiikey. Instead, you may want to try running the game from an installed launcher like GeckoOS, it will allow you to ply the game without updating. Later on down the track, hackers will eventually know what IOS the game runs on, which can be installed to run the game, since games always run independant of the system menu.
However, it may not come to this, so we just have to wait & see.

I have an old wii with wiikey installed (4.2U), also, I softmodded when NSMB was out.
I just burn one of the isos of MG2 (helpwii version, scrubbed), and it works flawlessly, no update, no nothing from the burned cd. I am happy playing it right now.
Just follow all the guides to play NSMB safely and you will be able to play MG2.

You probably need the 4.2 update. If you want you can just install the IOS56-64-v5405. WAD using WAD Manager & it should start.
http://www.mediafire.com/?nuix0mmkxxo
Download this & install it using WAD Manager on your sd card. Games always run independant of the system menu, so after installing this, your game should start working.

I have had my Wii updated to 4.2U in the very beginning and everything else works fine.
I tried it regular boot and it came up with the 250 or higher needed. Then I tried the Error Fix 002 and that just seemed to make this message pop up:
Error -1 SetWFPS -124 (something like that)
What does that error mean?
I have the Config USB Loader.

Actually, you don't need to do any updating to get it to work. I never installed an ios or cios and my wii is still at 3.2U. It is hard modded with yaosm. The only thing I needed to do to get it to work was to install homebrew channel then use that to launch neogamma. Neogamma may complain that no ios249 is installed but that is ok. Just launch the game through neogamma if you are using a disc and it will work.

Here is a complete explanation those who don't get it. Every game Nintendo make requires an Internal Operating System, or an IOS to run on. The newer games (like Mario Galaxy 2) require newer IOS, which your wii may not have if you are on a lower firmware version. If that is the case, the game will refuse to run. The official Nintendo way to get these IOS is to update your wii from the disc. The update will contain the IOS you need, however it will cause problems later along the track, e.g 4.2 erasing your softmods. Installing the individual IOS will allow for the game to play, while not having to update the firmware version. This is especially good for MG2. Mainly because it has the 4.2 update, which can erase your softmods or in some cases brick your wii.

Yes, smg2 requires the new IOS if you are trying to load it off the disc channel, but there are ways to play it without updating anything. Read my post above.

It works for me with a wiikey 2 and the latest wiikey update (1.3) on the disc channel. I also installed the latest Wii 4.2 firmware update. That's all I did and everything works perfectly
