I took this from a guide that I use
like you I also had some trouble getting those programs to do it properly
so this is the best easiest way i have found
and i also think that the wbfs is the way to go if the harddrive is didicated to the wii
all my other stuff goes on the sd card
but i dont connect my hd to my pc anymore at all
i burn the games install them and keep the discs as backups
so if you have the newer drive that wont read burnt discs you might want to look at the fat32 or other options to make it easier to connect to your pc

12) Plug your USB hard drive into your computer USB port.

13) Right-click ?My Computer? and select ?Manage?

14) Click ?Disc Management? on the left side of the window.

15) Right-click your hard drive and select ?delete partion? or ?delete volume? depending on which appears.

16) Right-click the hard drive again and select ?new?. Choose not to format the hard drive and assign it a letter. Make it W for Wii.

17) Open WBFS Manager and select drive W. Click format.

18) Plug your hard drive into your Wii (bottom port if your Wii is on its side)

19) Load up your USB Loader, insert a game and select install.\

20) Once you have a game installed you can click the cover to download a cover, 3-d cover and a disc image.

That?s all there is to it.
