Got a wii which is a few years old which previously had a soldered wiikey fitted. For some reason, this has stopped working.

If I buy a wasabi solderless mod, is this going to work ok if I leave the old wiikey soldered on? (Unfortunately, I dont have the technical skill to fit/remove a soldered mod and I cant get hold of the fella who originally did it for me).

Impossible to say as no one will know what is wrong with your old chip - it may be part working.

look at softmodding as an alternative as this will not interfere with existing chip

Yeh. See what you mean.

What are the chances of bricking my wii when attempting to softmod?

it's always high, because you will tamper with critical system files.

but because the first thing after getting HBC, bootmii, and priiloader installed is to make a NAND backup, the risk is lowered but not eliminated.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .

Does having a NAND backup allow you to unbrick it then?

yes, provided you have the proper programs to restore the NAND, ie. bootmii and priiloader.
