I just recently purchased a wii and would like to start backing up my games onto a hard drive. I tried doing it myself but im running 4.2u and it said that bootmii could'nt be installed due to some boot 1 and boot2 bullshit. The problem is i don't want to do it if i can't restore my wii back to factory if i ever catch problems... theres a guy in my area that charges 25 to mod and set my wii up to my external harddrive witch leads me to my next question.
If i use my 1tg external hardrive for wii games, can it also be used for storage as well? or must it be dedicated to wii only?

The reason why you can't install BootMii as boot2 is because you only recently bought your Wii. You can only install it as boot2 if you bought your Wii before mid 2008 (there's no exact date). The only way is to install it as an IOS, backup your Wii's NAND and then use Preloader (click here) to get to the Homebrew Channel if your Wii gets bricked. You can then run BootMii from there.

As for this question, I can't help you. But do you mean 1TB (terrabyte) instead of 1TG? Anyway, good luck.

Yes it can still be used for storage. For Wii games you will need a WBFS partition on your Hard Drive. Use Easues or some similar partitioning software (Partition Magic) to create some free space on your drive, make sure and set it to primary, and assign it a drive letter. Once you have created an unformatted partition you can use WBFS Manager to format it to WBFS. Then you will need a loader for your wii such as USB loader GX, to load the games from your partition.

all you need to do to get your hdd working with the wii and be able to use it for other stuff is to format it to FAT32 and use cfg loader by oggzee, usptactical, gannon and Dr.Clipper
go to http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=147638 and use there fat version

Uh, no. You can use a FAT32 or NTFS formatted drive as well. There's no need for a WBFS partition or WBFS manager anymore.
If you do have it formatted NTFS though you won't be able to load games onto the drive using the USB loader and will only be able to do it from your PC. But the configerable USB loader can use a FAT32 partition exactly as it would the WBFS one.

Your best bet would be formating your 1TB drive to FAT32. This way you can run Wii Homebrew Applications/Wii Games etc. etc. from the 1TB drive.
In addition you can store files to the 1TB Drive. You will have a file size limitation of 4GB due to the FAT32 limitation but any file under 4GB can be stored on the drive. If you have a file over 4GB you can always use a tool like WinRar and split the file in half to store it on the 1TB Drive.
I have both a 4.2 and CFG USB Loader (FAT32) guide in my sig.

so i would be able to store anything on the hardrive as long as it isn't over 4.2? does that mean the wii games have to be winrar'd as well?

Is it an easy task backing up my nand? and then restoring it if anything ever happened?
