that depends on what the model of the disk drive is. if it's a newer system, the disk drive won't read backup disks so the drivekey won't work for you. if that's the case you will need a flatmii or a wode jukebox to play backups from a hard drive via usb.

why would you even want to use a mod chip? its so much better to just soft mod your wii and your warranty is kept in tack

wrong. your warranty is voided because you installed unauthorized software. but that's beside the point.
softmodding is the way to go. a usb hard drive and configurable usb loader will play practically everything. all you have to do is rip all your originals to the drive; don't be cheap and do rent and burn or download.
ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure
got a whole lot more to list . . .

the only problem with softmodding is that every time nintendo comes out with a new update, you have to wait for a fix and softmod it again, with a flatmii or wode jukebox you don't have to worry about that. you can't play out of region games after system menu 4.2 though if that matters to you

The WODE & Flatmii are expensive, & hard-mods ware affected by 4.2 onward system updates, I only suggested the Drivekey as an answer because that's what the user asked for. In my own opinion softmods are much better.

actually you are 100% wrong, im on 4.3 and all my games work 100% even if they are out of region games using usb loader, ive never ever had a problem with games working on my wii. And cee43ja1 your warranty is still valid as I sent my wii in for repairs do to water getting in the machine and when it came back homebrew and usb loader channel were removed and all 100% covered... all i did was reinstall it after getting it back

i was saying that with system menu 4.2 and above using a modchip only, you can't play out of region games

actually you are wrong, if you are paying for repairs, nintendo will fix it regardless of homebrew or not, if you are asking them to repair it for free due to other factors, they run a system check. If homebrew is detected they send you home the wii plus a white letter stating that custom software such as homebrew is install and they didnt fix it. I have seen it first hand.

as long as you're sure it's a GC2-D2C then a drive key will be fine. v2 is a new software version, go with that.

don't buy a hardware mod. softmodding is easier to fix. 4.3 has been out for how long now, and i'm still at 4.1. yet, i can still play all the latest games without updating because i have all the latest IOSes and priiloader blocks all updates. that goes for the original discs and usb games.

you must understand that not everyone is as tech savvy as you appear to be. i know people that have looked at a softmod guide and said screw this. besides that, after you connect a modchip what is there to fix with a hardmod? other than playing out of region games it just works no matter what update nintendo has put out.
how could fixing your softmod after a nintendo update be easier than having to do nothing at all after a nintendo update?

easy. i DON'T do system updates. how hard is it not to update and install one or two IOSes? yeah, i wanted a modchip before, but that's been long gone; why pay for something that can be done for FREE. one main thing for softmodding: performance. usb loading is superior to disc loading.
and who said modchips survives updates? there was SMG which was blocked right away and wiikey users had to wait months for an update. it's the same thing now.
if you're modding ANY current gen system, it's known that you will have to be on top of things. THERE IS NO SET IT AND FORGET IT. as long as firmware is involved, it's cat and mouse.

i agree that disc loading can be problematic, that's why i recommended a flatmii or wode because they are usb loading modchips.
as for SMG, that was years ago, the last game to have any effect on a modchip was NSMB and they had a pretty quick fix for that.
i think juvenile2 doesn't need our debate to go on any longer, we've given our pro's and con's for both, it's up to him which way he wants to go
