Don't update from out of region discs. For example, if your Wii is NTSC, don't update from a PAL disc. Other than that, as long as you're not messing around with anything now that it's modded you should be fine.

You technically don't have to update at all, but some games will require it. Basically I only update when needed. I've been on 3.4 for about 6 months and haven't had to update.

Install Bootmii and Preloader .29 to protect from a brick.

If you happen to brick and have Bootmii installed to Boot2 and Preloader installed you should have no problems recovering from it.

Installing bad WAD files or out of region files can cause a brick. Doing any modification to the Wii menu theme could cause a brick if you don't do it correctly. As said above do not update your system with an out of region firmware update.

What a perfect segway for me to hijack this thread! Well, not actually because its on the same subject kinda.

Larry, on your recommendation I have installed both preloader and bootmii on my wii. bootmii is installed as boot2. I have set up bootmii to go straight to system menu but I have preloader running the usb gx file first so when you power up my wii, it just shoots straight into usb loader gx.

I know that there are some things that preloader does that bootmii doesn't but I also know that people have asked me what the difference is between bootmii and preloader and I couldn't really answer. They're both preloaders aren't they? Can you detail exactly what each program is and what the difference between them are and why I would need to have both installed? Thanks man!

Both pretty much do the same.

Bootmii can restore NAND.

Preloader can reload hacks.

But I tend to use Bootmii as a last resort (if I need to restore NAND). So the Bootmii folder that was created was transfered to my PC for safe keeping and so it will not load straight away.

I use Preloader for hacks and it is much easier to go into (just hold reset) when I need to go into it.

I guess there really is no need for Preloader if you don't use hacks. Bootmii (installed to Boot2) will pretty much do everything that preloader does except for the hacks.
