Why Do you need a mod chip when you can softmod?

If you use homebrew and then play games from a hard drive or disk with a software mod, why do you need a mod chip what is the advantage?

Some prefer a hardmod because there is less impact, if not any on Hardmods when a system update comes out.

Anymore the benefits of a softmod out weights the benefits of a modchip. At least that is my opinion.

and I think also, 2 years ago there were no softmods just mod chips. I bought my Wii only after the mod chips started shipping.

With a hardmod you can take most updates without worrying about Nintendo plugging a hole in homebrew (ala 4.2)

Before softmods were reliable, there was only hardmods. I bought a "cut pins" Wii and hardmod was the most reliable mod at the time.
