Okay so i dont know anything about Wii modding at all, im a complete noob when it comes to it. I brought a Wii off my friend and its about 2 years old now and he hasnt updated the firmware in like forever so its kind of old. Now i have a few questions.... do i need a chip to play games off an external USB HD? or is there an exploit kind of thing i can run to install custom firmware? and also can you play online? when running games off the HD?

No you don't need a chip. You can softmod and yes you can still play online but there is only a handful of games that actually have any kind of online component anyway.
