Hey folks,

So, my Wii is in a bad way, so to speak. I'd been happily running 3.2U with HBC and the 0.3gamma loader for ages, but decided I'd try upgrading to the 4.0U system menu using Waninkoko's handy installer.

So, I found this pretty good tutorial:

http://www.consolespot.net/forums/wii-ha...kup-loader.html

And figured I'd follow it to also get preloader and some other useful bits installed.

So, basically what I did was:

Used Twilight Hack to reinstall HBC
Upgraded HBC
Installed cIOS36 rev 9
Updated to menu 4.0U, using "Firmware Updater 4.0"
Patched IOS60

I was then following these steps to install Preloader 0.29:

"Go back to HBC and load "Preloader 0.29 Installer" and after a disclaimer click 1 and then you will be taken to a Recovery menu..."

So, I hit 1, my current system boot loader was moved and Preloader 0.29 was installed. It was then going to reboot, and said it would wait 5 seconds... 15 minutes later, nothing happened. Completely frozen, no buttons work at all.

I then restarted the Wii, and nothing. No errors, no video signal getting to the TV at all. Tried a component and a composite cable, still nothing. The disk drive works, spits out DVDs happily, but I can't get the Wii to do anything.

I did try holding down the reset button after powering up, but still, nothing gets to the TV at all. :-(

I don't think I have bootmii installed (I may have done a year ago when I first installed HBC, but I don't remember) and I don't have a NAND backup. So, I'm wondering how I can get around this?

Of course, I could send the unit back to Ninty, but it's been heavily modded (software), has some wires hanging off the mobo from a removed mod chip, and is in a fancy shiny silver case... It's also a US model, and I'm based in the UK... So, I think they'll tell me where to stick it, even if I put it back in its original white case...

I'm wondering if it's even worth me trying SoftMiiFrii? Starting to run out of ideas though...

By the way, in terms of returning the Wii to Nintendo and hoping they don't spot how crazily modded it is - has anyone had any experience of this? I saw on a few other forums that Ninty just seem to copy over any save games they can salvage to a refurbished Wii and replace it with that, no questions asked... But not sure how true that is.

I guess after the 4.2 bricking craziness it must be busy times for Nintendo's replacement service, so perhaps it's a good time to try my luck?

They check your Wii and see it's modded and you must pay the postage and the checking and you get back your bricked Wii.

Are you certain of that? There are a number of people on the web who have apparently shipped off modded Wiis to Nintendo, and received a refurbished model running 3.1 back, with all their data on it. Most seem to be from North America though, so I'm not sure whether Nintendo UK would be more vigilant. The only local story I can find was a guy who paid £70 to Nintendo after he bricked his firmware, and they replaced the mobo, and sent him his Wii back with all his data and a new 12 month warranty! Sweet!

Your reading old stuff if it says they ship back 3.1 firmware.

The previous poster is correct. If they find out you have softmodded the system they will charge you!

Have you tried unplugging your system and leaving it unplugged for an hour or so then try to start it up again?

I'm not that worried about being charged - my Wii was sold in the first week of release in the USA, so it's well and truly out of warranty, and I'd expect to get charged between £50 and £70 for a repair. It's the idea of being charged and then having the unit returned without being repaired that turns me off... I might as well just buy another Wii on eBay.

Yes, I did try powering down, and unplugged the unit for about 7 hours last night, but no change I'm afraid :( It's still completely dead, no signal to the TV at all. It doesn't even power down to an orange light when you hold the power button in, it's either switched off (red light) or on but doing nothing (green light)

If I can find a GC controller I'll give SaveMiiFrii a shot tonight, using SSBB to try to force the thing to fire up and reinstall its system menu. Fingers crossed, but I'm not desperately hopeful... :(

Just spent a while trying to get SaveMiiFrii to work, but no luck at all. I dismantled the pad and was able to press all four directions at once, but still didn't get anything at all from the Wii.

BTW - about me "reading old stuff" - the person who had their Wii returned from Nintendo with a 3.1 system menu installed tells me it was only 3 weeks ago, so not that old at all. In fact, I now know two people who managed to get their Wii repaired by Nintendo in the UK despite having homebrew installed - one paid £70 for a mobo replacement, the other paid £27 for a GPU replacement. The latter sounds shockingly cheap to me!

I think what I might have to do is take it to a shop in London if I can, and if they can't fix it, send it off to Nintendo and hope for the best.
