One possible theory is that your wii's firmware version is 4.2 or 4.3, & your trying to play backups that are out of your region (E.g Trying to play a NTSC-U game on a PAL wii or vice-versa). What is your wii's current firmware version?

Another theory is that your wii is one of the newer wiis that stop DVD Backups from playing altogether. How old is your wii?

Firstly, it should be said that on 4.2 (NTSC-U) firmware, only NTSC-Ugames will play not PAL, NTSC-J or KOR.

Secondly, I've done some reading, & it seems this is a very common problem. The only solution I have read is that you should install some cIOS, however that being said messing around with IOS is a dangerous thing to do, so you may as well go all the way and completely softmod your wii. It seems the logical thing to do:

Here is a 4.2 softmod guide: http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials-only/24839-softmod-any-4-2-wii.html

If your DVD Backups continue to fail even after softmodding, we can assume that your wii is one of the newer ones that stops DVD-R playback altogether.

I don't think here is the best place to discuss this, but wiiiso.com is a good place to look.
