wii firmware 2.1e cant connect to wifi

hello all

been trying for days now to connect a wii with 2.1e firmware to my sky netgear router with no joy. it keeps saying cant find ssid. yet when i use my own wii which is on firmware 4.2 it will do it. i dont understand. nor will the 2.1e read or find the sd card once inserted. Any suggestions?? called sky cause first thought wifi not working, reset router changed chanels. got it to find my router once or twice but then when doing connection test it could find a connection. yet i am working from a wifi laptop with no problems? What other ways is there of updating the wii? and will it only read the sd card when its been update to more advanced firmware?

please explain as simple as possible as i am quite new to this all and not a whizz at all
