Wii fit semi bricked?

Sorry for the simple question but I'm out of my depth and stuck here. We bought a modded Wii console (they all are over here) and have had no trouble with it at all. It is version 3.1U (presumably a US console?) and it is not connected to the internet.

I was recently given a Wii fit plus board and disc from the UK. It came up asking me to upgrade. After scouring forums etc We decided to just give it a go as we hardly use the Wii for anything else. It worked fine, we have duplicates of the forecast and news channels, all my cheapo games plus the genuine Wii Sports game work fine. We can't access the settings (it asks us to visit a URL and do something, I forget what but we're not bothered about that) and I have read that this means it is semi bricked.

The problem is the Wii Fit disc won't work. The board is all sync-ed up, when I insert the disc all the logos etc come up, but when I click on 'Start' I just get a black screen and have to hold down the power button on the console to turn it off.

Am I ever going to be able to play with the Wii Fit or have I screwed it up? Is there anything I can do at home or do I have to take it into a shop. As I said before it was bougth modded so I don't know if it's a WiiKey or what that they've used to modify it but I can always ask...

I'm sorry, this has probably been done a thousand times before but I'm really appreciate some advice or opinions on this...
