I am a complete novice at this but I am trying to find out how to copy some of my wii games so that I can take copies while I work away. Can anyone give me some advice on the best software to use and any pitfalls please

You need a softmodded Wii to do this or a specific model Lg drive (google it) . You also need your Wii connected to your wifi and a program call Wii DVD Dumper . And a computer with firefox .

Wii DVD Dumper - http://translate.googleusercontent.com/t...fb7Y3xvH4k0iffw

Why dont you save yourself some hassle and download the games from the internet for backup purposes and then burn to DVD instead of using wii dvd dumper?

You will still need to softmod your wii to play the backup games though.

Or just back up straight to external drive and load the games with ConfUsbLoader . After you've soft modded the Wii of course .
