Wii softmod roadblocks! help :(

So i was at Wii version 4.1u and was following the guide from these forums on how to softmod it to play games from an external HDD. I got to the point of putting the SD card in my wii with the IOS things on it and my wii would hardlock and need to be rebooted. so people suggested updating the wii to resolve this. well now i am at 4.2 and my SD card doesnt lock up the system anymore but it wont read anything that i put in it like the program to backflash the wii or the one to add the homebrew channel. I am stuck, and I know im a noob and just dont know what im doing, so anyone have some advise? let me know if you need anymore info. thanks in advance.
