I had 3.4u ... downloaded and installed Wii 4.0 softmod hack (NO ZELDA NEEDED).... Now disc channel says i must update system to run any disc. WTF do I do? PLZ help!
Did you uppgrade to FW 4.1u like the guide suggested? If not that is why you are getting an update message. THe newer Wii games like Ghostbusters and Punch Out need to update if you are below 4.0
the new FW out is 4.1u and the game you have in at the moment may require something from there. Also a lot of games will tell you their is an update the first time you run them, even if you dont need the update. Basically it says it is there when you look in the disc channel, but when you click it, it checks your system, realizes that you dont actually need the update, and then it just loads the game.
You can turn off this option if you installed preloader. It has a hack that lets you disable discs from updating your system.
If you have not followed the guide for How to load backups from the disc channel I reccommend you do this. It will not only allow you to load your backups from the disc channel, but it gives you preloader as well.
If you already have preloader installed then turn off you wii, and turn it back on holding down the reset button. when preloader comes up, go to system hacks, and from there you can turn off the auto update from a disc feature.
as long as the disc you are trying to load is from YOUR REGION (NTSC,PAL, JAP) you are safe to update with it.
Or you can just turn off that option from within preloader so you dont have to worry about it anymore.
If you update to 4.1u and you already have preloader installed make sure to find and replace your hacks.ini file with one for the FW you are upgrading to.
I suggest going back to the guide and making sure you follow ALL the instructions including the FW update part. There is no reason to stay down on 3.4u. The hacks that come with the guide downgrade the IOS files that are patched during the 4.0 or 4.1 FW updates so it is safe as long as you follow the instructions and downgrade the ISO files accordingly.
the preloader is installed and as the guide suggested i tried to turn off the updates, yet when i selected system hacks fom preloader menu it responds with couldn't find hacks.ini on fat32 nor on NAND. I have the files on a 512MB SD card formatted in FAT, not fat32.. (?) ... so i can't access the hacks menu. also i tried to re-run the entire process from the beginning hoping for a miracle, but it failed with the first step saying something couldnt initiate or it failed, i forgot... So are you saying that i should've had 4.0 FW first and I'm screwed or dont worry about the system update it's a formality, and maybe there's still is hope??
also i really appreciate the insight thanks alot 4 sharing.. and the game i d/l was ntsc-u.. i checked with region frii and it's usa and ran it with brick blocker too. i read a tutorial saying to do it so i did..
rename the file from hacks.ini to just hacks with no file extension. That may make the hacks.ini file readable. If you cant get the hacks.ini file to be recognized by preloader none of the settings you change will stay.
Also make sure you have the proper hacks.ini file for the FW you are running.
If you followed the guide, then you have hacks.ini file for FW 4.1u or 4.0u depending on when you first followed the guide. If you are still running 3.4u and have a hacks.ini file for 4.1u or 4.0u, there is your problem.
I updated to 4.0 and it worked fine. Others have updated to 4.1 and it works fine for them. You are supposed to update BEFORE you do the soft mod though. If you update AFTER you do the softmod, you have to either repeat the softmod steps, or at least run IOS60patched.wad and IOS downgrader.
Either update to 4.1u via the nintendo servers, and then redo the softmod, or at least run IOSPAtched60.wad and IOS downgrader, or change your hacks.ini file to match the FW you are using, which according to your original post is 3.4u
the new and improved softmod guide discussses this and provides links to hacks.ini files for each FW. Make sure you have the right one.
Finally,
I reccommend just upgrading via the nintendo servers, and then either redoing the softmod steps, or running ISO60patched.wad and IOS downgrader. Since you seem to have a lot of questions before you do each step, I think I might just suggest you redo the soft mod steps since the directions are spelled out clearly and there is links to all the files you need right with the directions.
If you also follow the linked guide at the bottom of the new and improved softmod guide called loading backups from the disc channel you will get preloader with the proper hacks.ini file and you can also follow the linked guide to installing and using bootmii.
the system update is safe. you may need to run iospatched60.wad and ios downgrader to install and load wad games via the wadmanager, but otherwise everything else should work fine after updating.
when i go to update a notice comes up saying : importtant: if you dont want to accept this update blah blah blah.... If you wii console has an unauthorized technical modification, this upgrade could cause inoperability of you console .... do i Still update ?
I reccommend that you update from the nintendo servers but yes it is ok to update even though it is warning you. This is nintendo's way of scaring us I guess.
You better make damn sure your disc is from the same region as your console before you update with it though.
