Hi all,
I got up this morning to a nice flashy blue wii drive, and a wii-mail informing me that Nintendo have released ANOTHER system menu update (Possibly 4.2e (?), but im not sure!).
UPDATE: CONFIRMED 4.2 FROM WIKIPEDIA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_Menu#System_updates)
I have a Soft-Modded 4.1e console, with USB Loader GX (running rev 14 ios).
Is it safe to do the update from Nintendo? Or will this screw up my wii and/or softmod and/or USB loader? Also, can anyone tell me the benefits to 4.2e from 4.1e?
Thanks in advance for your info!
Warmest Regards.
(*) My backups are LEGALLY MADE COPIES of games I already own, I have got 3 Sticky fingered children, each with their own Wii in their room, so the backups are made of the originals, and the originals stored in the loft incase of scratching, fingerprints or other miscellaneous damage. I own a RETAIL COPY of all backups that I make. I DO NOT CONDONE PIRACY!

No Do not Update to 4.2
* Deletes most homebrew.
* Now uses IOS70. (No Preloader due to that)
* Wii Shop Channel updated. Use WiiSCU to update the shop channel. Use NUS Downloader to download the Wii Shop Channel v17
* Most of the IOS's have been updated or stubbed.
* Updates your boot2 to boot2v4 (what LU64+'s have). (That means no downgrading of any IOS, and due to that, you can't revert back to your old System Menu. So BootMii as boot2 installed is removed.)

Really? Wow! Pretty major update really! Well, a lot of behind the scene's stuff anyways! Thanks for the info, seems like Nintendo are really on an "all-out" battle against homebrew now!
Thanks for the info, just think how many "unsuspecting" softmodded wii owners are gonna do the update with no going back! Good job im relatively wise and asked first!
Perhaps there should be a nice big WARNING somewhere so as people dont mess up! But then again, if you are prepared to do the update WITHOUT first checking the implications, then you deserve the results!
Finally, is there any real benefits to updating? I mean, what do you miss out on if you don't update? If its only the shop channel then i cant see why people would WANT to do the update?! Especially when you can do it with NUSDownloader and WiiSCU easy enough!
Anyways, enough of me rambling!

My wii has a modchip. I want to get old school mario bros games but my "wii shop" channel says I need to update my wii. should I? Will I not be able to play my wii backups? what about other games burned to disc? Is there another way to get to play oldschool mario games on the wii without using wii shop? I really need some help with this! thanks, mate. Cheers.

Update to 4.2 firmware. Then follow the 4.2 firmware softmod guide in my sig to get the softmod bak onto the system.

@larrylje
Can both of your guide in your sig, be followed as well for a 4.2E ?

The 4.2 guide says all serial/region systems except for Korean. So I think that should already have answered your question.

Thanks, sorry for having overlooked this evident point.
I will surely read more attentively when I'll softmod it.
Thanks again!

It will let you play backup games. A simple Google search would have answered this question.

I bought the New Super Mario Bro's games and tried to play it and it says that I need to do a Wii Update in order to play. Also it says if I do the Wii update I may render the console inoperable because it's modded. Using the firmware in your sig would it help me play this new game, which is not a back up, it's the actual game, playable? It seems that all the newest games don't work and require a "wii update" but the older games work just fine, including back ups and original games. IN the 4.2 softmod guide, which one do I download, all of them? plus, what if I do not have an SD card? please help me, I'd like to play my new games, which cost me 50 dollars and would also like to use my Wii Shop Channell.

is there an easier way to get all the softmod downloads I need, one that doesn't not require an SD card?

Hi there,
I'm having the following problem with my wii.
I recently updated suddenly my softmodded 4.1e Wii to 4.2e since then usb loader, wad manager and more isnt working.
My question is, can I softmod it again by using the guides i found around here or will I brick it? Should i format the Wii memory before I begin?
Thanks in advance!
