I was just wondering there are any experiences with using a 2.5" external USB HDD without extra power source?

I want to have as few power cables running around as possible, but at the same time I don't want playing games off the HDD being unstable due to power issues over USB.

I've seen the USB device compatibility list, but I'd just like to know if the Wii manages to power an HD through the USB flawlessly in general?

I was actually planning on the 320 GB version of that, so I think that's settled then.

Can I have one WBFS partition and one FAT/NTFS partition on it? I'm never going to buy enough games to fill 320 GB so, I thought I might use some of the capacity for media files for instance.

You can keep the whole thing FAT32. Most USB loaders will read a FAT32 partition exactly as they would a WBFS one.

western digital scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig with AMS venus DS2 2.5" enclosure; use to be vantec nexstar CX 2.5" enclosure. i'd recommend aluminum enclosures over the prebuilts to dissipate heat better.

been using the setup for nearly a year with no problems whatsoever. you can partition the drive however you want; i have FAT32/NTFS/WBFS on the drive, and everything works.
