WiiConnect24 with softmod - conflicting opinions?

I have read a few postings within this forum, however would like to check my understanding of if it's safe to used WiiConnect on a softmodded console?

One post claims after 3.4 with WiiConnect on, this will force firmware updates, however other postings suggests it's fine to have WiiConnect24 on as long as you dont update?

I am concerned my children will accidently accept any update presented, so have aired on the side of caution and turned it off.... Just wondered what the actual position is. Thanks.

If your worried your children will accidentally update then turn off WiiConnect24 and place a parental control on the Internet so you have to have a code to access the Internet.

Other then that some will say not to and some will say it is fine.

I have WiiConnect24 on myself and have never turned it off (Nintendo hasn't updated systems automatically).
