I received a Wii bought in 2006 with the original Wiikey, but firmware was updated to 4.3U.
I want to update the Wiikey to 1.99beta to utilize the new features, but I'm afraid something might screw up.
Has anybody done this without problems?
Thanks guys!
mod chips are drive chips and the firmware you are on is irrelavant. Worry more about screwing up your wiikey by flashing it with a bad file. Make sure you have a copy of that old 1.9b recovery i believe it was called just in case. Otherwise flash away. The 4.3u won't matter to the wiikey.
I believe you only get 6x drive speeds and the ability to play original dual layer games with the new 1.99, read into it. I am using 1.9g still and all is fine for me, but I dont like any games that are on dual layer so it hasn't been a problem for me.

actually, if i read correctly, 1.99beta allows me to run a backup of NSMB. my current setup allows me to run a backup of the game, but then it eventually yields a disc error.

It pretty much mirrors what i originally said. The user complaining was having issues with PAL games on an NTSC system. Updating past I think 4.0 removes region free ability even with modchips. They can still play games from their region though. My friend has a wiikey and has updated to 4.3u and everything works fine. IN the thread you linked another user posted the same news. He also updated to 4.3u and his wiikey wii worked fine. At least with games from his region.
and if you noticed another user reported that he or his friend bricked his wii trying to update to new wiikey firmware. Exactly what i was originally warning about.
NOTE about NSMB Wii -
My wiikey Wii will play a backup of NSMB Wii off a dvd-r disc once the image is patched. Search out the patch and the use it on the backup image you made of your original game.
I have flashed my chip before and it worked fine although once i got to 1.9g I have not had a reason to even look into updates since everything seems to play fine. If you want to update your wiikey knock yourself out. I'm sure a lot of other users have updated just fine. I was only warning you to make sure you had the recovery disc handy in case you had any issues flashing the wiikey.
Woops, I take some of that back. I'm tired and just re-read that post you linked and see that some users are having troubles with the combination of 4.3u and the new wiikey firmware. SORRY
Even more reason to not mess around with the firmware on the wiikey. I am a big fan of softmodding. During the process for 4.3u you can downgrade to a lower firmware if you want. Then you can update your Wiikey firmware once you get below 4.3u. Your gonna need one of the exploited games though since your on 4.3u. Otherwise stick with your current wiikey FW and the 4.3u and try and find the AP patch for NSMB.
