I have a Wii with wiikey 1 fitted and I think this is a 1.9s firmware.

We have just purchased "Just Dance" and its saying a System update is needed. We are currently on 4.0e.

Is this safe to do or will it stop my Wiikey working?

I do have the homebrew channel but think this stopped working when we bought wii fit and had to update the firmware to get this working.

Not too concerned about the homebrew channel but would like to maintain the wiikey functionality!

This sort of query only comes up for me every 6 months, therefore I lose track of what version to be on, which to avoid etc so always have to come and ask the obvious questions again.

Is my wiikey still the best thing to rely on or are there any other hacks (software based) that can be run on the Wii which will bring me the same functionality without having to ask this type of question every 6 months or so?

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks

The main problem isif it is original.
If it is original and PAL by the firmware 4.0e you wont have any problems.
If it is a NTSC game specially a rip, TAKE IT FROM ME you will brick.

As stated above it is safe to update with a game disc as long as it is the same region as your system.

Is it safe to update to 4.2 with original wii key? Through the internet?

It is hard to catch up to all this info. I am wondering what is the point of a chip now a days. I would like to just follow larrys guide on softmoding 4.2. But can you do that if you have a chip installed?

Yes you can softmod a console with a modchip and all will be fine. I have done two of them, one with a wiikey and one with a d2ckey.
You can also update to 4.2 but if you have homebrew working some of it might stop or act funny after the update. I have also updated a wiikey to 4.2u via the nintendo wifi and all was fine.

Updates cause issues with homebrew running, but has not yet affected consoles with modchips.

Ok thanks, i went ahead and updated and all seems fine. Watched some stuff with mplayer ce. Havent tried any games, never play games on it anyways lol.

Im thinking since development is pretty much dead for my chip, original wii key. I might as well softmod and start keeping up with that.

Just making sure before I go ahead with this:

I have the original wiikey (wiikey 1), 1.9s firmware, 3.2U. Recently purchased the original copy of "EA Sports Active Personal Trainer Bundle", and was prompted to do a system update when I popped in the disc. So from what I read here, it is safe to go ahead & perform the system update, right? I don't want to risk bricking my wii...can someone help please?

P.S. I'm not sure if I have the homebrew channel or not...how can I find out if I do?

Thanks so much in advance!

If you dont even know if you have the homebrew channel then you dont need it. Go ahead and update. If you ever learn what the homebrew channel is and want to use it you can still install it even after you do the update.

Make sure the disc you use for update is the same region as your console or you will brick. You said it was a store bought so you should be ok unless you bought it from another country of the net.

IF you want to install the homebrew channel then follow the first few steps of the How to Softmod a Wii. First page of this forum.
