Wiikey v1 1.9 + Super Mario Bros Update (4.2U?)

Ive been away from the wii for a while, but finally a game was released to peak our interests.
We bought the retail Super Mario Bros (NTSC-U) and want to play it on our wii with wiikey v1(1.9).
It tells us that an update is necessary to play, and Im not certain what update it includes 4.1U, 4.2U?
I see that 4.2 will kill homebrew (no concern to me), and kill region free (also no concern to me), but is it safe to update beyond that?
I'm surprised this exact question hasn't been asked a million times, but there seems to be a lot less traffic on here than there was a few years ago...

Just updated to wiikey 1.9s and then did a system update to the lastest Wii firmware 4.2U. Everything is fine.

Hi, I was also curious about the 4.2U update. I have a wiikey, that I haven't updated since mario galaxy came out, which was 1.9g, 3.1U for the wii. And I was wondering if it was safe to just update it. And is it true that the 4.2 renders the region free inoperable?

Is it confirmed that the nsmb (original) gmaes contains the 4.2u?

I just updated console after being gone a while to 4.2u and i have had the wiikey for a long time and my super mario galaxy and mario kart always worked until i updated. now those dont work but other backups do. I dont get it. Can i downgrade and make stuff work???? What should i DO?

Traffic will pick up again when next next gen consoles are released, there will be plenty to talk about.

Is this true? With wiikey 1 and after getting the 4.2u update back ups of SMG and Mario kart and possibly many other games wont work anymore?
Seems like its not worth the trouble with wiikey 1 users as it seems like all future nintendo games will have some kind of forced updates and anti piracy hacks that somehow make some back ups stop working

4.2U will killed Wiikey 1 and currently all my backups are not working. Do not attempt to upgrade to 4.2U if you want to run backups!!

Damn, I already did with Wii Sports Resort (Real game)
and now the backups show up in the Channel page... but get a disk error when loading them :(
I'm hard modded with the D2C chip... is there any update from the Chip makers? / has an Update ISO been uploaded at all to update the chip?
