Hi. I've been having a curious problem with Nero 7 installed on a new PC running Windows XP Pro SP3. When trying to burn XviD files to DVD-Video I was getting the error message "Unable to prepare data for recording: Prepare session failed: Transcoding of videos failed". DivX and MP4 files were handled with no problems at all.

Quite by chance I discovered what was causing the trouble: it was the K-Lite codec pack, which somehow was interfering with the correct working of the Nero program.

I've now run several checks and there's no doubt about it: with the K-Lite pack installed, Nero refuses to transcode XviD video files for burning to DVD-video; with K-Lite uninstalled the same files are handled with no problems at all.

Is this a known fault? If so, ithere any way of getting Nero and the K-Lite pack to work together properly?

I could of course permanently uninstall the K-Lite pack, but without it, the video enhancements - brightness, contrast, etc - in Windows Media Player don't work. Is there a way around that, does anyone know?

Bert

I had the same problem so I updated to K-Lite Mega Codec Pack v5.9.3 the latest version and believe it or not it fixed the problem.

Mike, many thanks for that. I'll try it.

Edited to add:

And it worked beautifully. Thanks again.

I'm glad it worked for you. I worked on this problem for months and when I updated K-lite codec pack I tried Nero Vision and it worked great again. Keep this in mind in fact I would burn this version to disc and save it. If you decide to update again and Nero Visions doesn't work you can reinstall this version again. Take care, Mike

Mike, since upgrading the K-Lite codec pack I've noticed a very strange thing: the sound playback on the VLC media player has become corrupted. Specifically, I'm getting a howlround effect, though one which doesn't build in the way that a howlround feedback usually does: it just remains at a constant level.

This might be a complete coincidence, of course, and not due at all to the K-Lite upgrade. And it doesn't really matter since I prefer to use Windows Media Player anyway. But it is puzzling.

I don't use the VLC Media Player but I've been thinking about trying it out. That is strange though. I hope your Nero Vision is working ok. I'm lost with out it. Mike

I tend to use VLC solely for capturing still images from video files (is that possible in WMP? I've never actually investigated) so if the sound corruption is permanent it really wouldn't worry me except insofar as it's annoying when something isn't functioning correctly. I've seen VLC praised many times as a very good all-round program, but by the time I discovered it I was too used to WMP to want to change.

My Nero installation seems to be working perfectly, happily.

I agree with being annoying when something doesn't work right. Nero Showtime will capture still images from video files. Just open Nero Showtime and click on the Hammer looking Icon which are the options. Open "General". You then want to choose "Capture Frame". Configure that the way you want. That is what I use to capture. I hope this helps. Mike

MPC can capture screens, KMPlayer is my favorite now(can setup what decoders/splitters you want used for each codec type), has lots of options for screen capture.
Not sure why you would have problems with VLC, it uses its own internal codecs, unless you have the option to use "System Codecs" enabled. Check to see if it is, if yes, disable it and see if there's any difference.

Piss me off, and I Will ignore You!

I think you ment v5.8.3 mega codec pack. v5.9.0 just came out April 16th. I'm thinking of updating but I always burn all old versions to disc just in case if a new version gives me problems I can revert back.

It wasn't enabled. I tried ticking it and playing a video: the result was exactly the same sound problem, only considerably louder.

Strange...
