I think I have some kind of virus on my pc. After about 20-30 mins of my pc being on I get a blue screen which says:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

then there is a whole page of info about it.

does anyone know what this is or why it is occring? im guessing its a virus. i've ran a scan but anything found is quarantined or deleted but this still occurs.

I tried a system restore and that never worked either.

any help appreciated.

1. Wrong forum if you thought it was a virus. We have a forum for viruses

2. Second, IMHO, your guess is bad. That BSOD and error message is typically caused by a driver interaction or bad hardware, specifically memory.

Indeed. Years ago i often had this error on Windows 2000 pc's, often upon actually installing Windows. The way i got around it was to remove all PCI cards, install Windows then add the cards back in. But it's quite a generic error and as per dailun's reply it can be caused by different things.

edit- thread title renamed from 'virus!!'

Motherboard drivers are corrupted or damaged. Also, it can be caused, because of bad memory, or unstable system. Overheating has nothing to do with this.
