Hi guys,

I've been having problems with downloading anything off the internet the last few days. I am running Vista on a Toshiba Satellite only a few weeks old. I've tried both FireFox and Internet Explorer and neither are solving my problems.

Basically, my downloads aren;t properly completing. It tells me they;ve completed, but the file size is too small. Obviously whne I try to use them, as a result, it says they're corrupted. This has happened with a number of different downloads from many different places. Including reliable sites such as GIMP and Microsoft.

I've scanned for viruses, spyware, malware etc. and I'm fine. I am running the internet through a wireless NetGear router. I've been searching for solutions for hours and a few people fixed it by disabling the ISP on the router. I did that and 1 download worked. After that, i've had problems again.

I've cleared out the temp files cache and all that too. Any advice?

In your context, what does ISP stand for? It obviously can't stand for Internet Service Provider.

It's a kind of firewall. It protects against one very specific type of attack and I've been previouslt advised that if it's causing problems, it isn't necessary.

Sorry to seem so stupid, but are you SURE that it's ISP?

I googled it and got no hits.

What kind of router do you own?

It's a NetGear WGR614 v9.

Oh, just realised I've been typing it in wrong though! I guess i'm the stupid one! :)

I'm actually talking about the SPI.

OK, for those of you having fun watching us thrash around, he's referring to SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection).

hey i had a similar problem with vista never did solve it ended up reinstalling vista and it cleared the problem up...

Have you tried downloading via FTP as well as HTTP?

try downloading this file:

It's the manual for a D-Link DNS-343 storage unit

Open this URL

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Multimedia/dns343/Manual/

See if you can save either the .pdf or .zip successfully

It's downloading using ftp protocol instead of http.

This might narrow down the issue.

OK, that means that the problem is with http downloads and not ftp downloads, which points to a browser interaction.

Since ftp and http use different ports, there could still be an issue with the router.

I'm out of "simple solutions". I will try to see if I can come up with something else to try.

Okay, thanks. My guess is with the router as I tried both IE and FireFox and neither worked. If you have any more suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

Cutting to the chase (but the thread IS amusing)

"Well after 3 installes, and racking my brain till I was blue, I found out it is the Firewall. I went into the settings under ActiveArmor and changed one of the settings from "offloadable" to "notoffloadble". My problem was instantly fixed.
