I am using windows vista upgrade my computer crashed. I have tried to reinstall vista but cannot get it to work properly as the older version is still in another part of the disk.
How can I format the drive as there is no facility in vista upgrade to do so and it will not let me use XP to do so as that is an older version any ideas of how I can get around this problem

what older version of windows is still other part of drive? that other part of drive sounds like your recovery partition & if so then do not delete that partition as you need that being you have an upgrade disk not the full disk of vista.

The older version is the original vista upgrade when computer crashed its showing up as old windows. If I was to use a full version of vista would there be a facility to format the hard drive on it

Format the drive after you boot from the original installation CD/DVD of Vista. You can not do this while running your PC on Vista. You need to boot from the installation disc.

No need to delete the partition, just format it then you can proceed with the installation.
