My first question is how important is it to use the safely remove hardware feature in Windows Vista X64?

Second, if I should continue to use this feature I wanted to know if there is a way to name them USB hub's and have them show up in the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the lower right hand corner of the screen.

I have 2 external USB hubs one is on the desk and the other is by the monitor. I want to rename the the USB's hubs and call them desk and monitor?

Is this possible?

thanks,

Jig

I guess what I'm trying to rename is the

usb mass storage device

I went into the Devise Manager and I can't find an option that will allow me to rename them.

1. If it's a disk device, it is preferred because if you have the delayed write feature turned on and you simply unplug the drive, you could corrupt data on the drive.

2. No, the names are dynamically assigned by device name.

Thanks Dailun

If I'm understanding you correctly

So flash memory in cameras, thumb drives, etc. can just be unplugged?

Whereas external HD's or (other things with spinning parts) should be removed using Safely remove hardware.

Delayed write can apply to memory devices at well (but typically they are not).

If you want to be 100% sure, use the safely remove all the time.

Alternately, for USB memory devices you can use the "eject" (right click from the my computer window.

I was also looking for how to rename the devices instead of the volume drives ... no luck yet.

One thing I discovered today is that if you open "device properties" there is a tab "Policies" where you can specify if you want to be able to disconnect just pulling the cable (Optimize for quick removal) or using the "Safely Remove Hardware" window (Optimize for performance).

When I say in the "device properties" in this case I'm not referring to the USB mass storage device itself but the real device (you need to check the "Display device components" in the Safely Remove Hardware window to be able to see them.

All these options are in Windows XP .... I suppose in Vista might be the same.
