I've got a problem with my WinXP SP3 computer. Sometimes when I try to put it on standby, the computer goes to the "Windows is preparing to standby..." screen and freezes there. My box will be "preparing to standby" for hours, or even days, if I would let it. This will happen both if I tell it to standby and if Windows goes into standby by itself after X minutes.

Also, sometimes when I start the computer up, I can begin to use it, and then it randomly reboots, like if there were a power blink, but there will have been none.

Help, please?

Do you have up-to-date antivirus software and have you recently scanned the computer for spyware?

I'm not sure on the first part of your post. However, I've seen random rebooting resulting for a nasty virus or spyware problem.

EDIT: As hooter007 suggested Malwarebytes is an excellent Anti-spyware application. You can download it right here on AfterDawn: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/securi...nti-malware.cfm

If you don't already have anti-virus software I'd recommend the 30-day free trial of NOD32 just to make sure your system is clean. You can get it here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/security/antivirus/nod32_nt.cfm

also try and roll your computer back before it started to happen with system restore

if that dont work or even if it does then do asPop Smith said get a good antivirus then disable system restore get something like malwarebytes aswell (free) run both of them see if anything pops up
when finished dont forget to put system restore back on
lets know how you got on

This has been happening for at least six months. I don't want to roll back that far. And yes, Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware are up-to-date.

some how your system has been corupted
even if you do find a way to get rid of it
it may be still hidden in a file system restore ect.ect..
just back up what you need
and try system restore, or factory default
