I recently had a virus in my pc and couldn't figure out where it came from so i have been scanning all my pc program's with the Virus Total online scanner and it picked up something inside VLC player exe file called "trojan/TDSS.nqj" I have searched the internet to try to find out if this is really a virus or a false positive but the only site i can find about it is in French so i can't read it but it looks like somebody is either asking if it is a false positive or telling us it is. If anyone can help me out could you please let me know, thanks.

Have you tried a fresh install of the VLC player? Maybe the one you have installed got altered by your previous virus.

Can you send the existing file to the virus scanner people for examination? I had a false positive once on a game that I was playing and reported the file (emailed it) to AVG. They confirmed the false positive status and actually issued a fix to clear the problem on the next regular update.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure if there is an option to send the information to the company to check whether it is false or not but i will have a look on the site and see if it's possible thanks. I have malwarebytes antispyware program but it says there is nothing in the file. The virus total online scanner uses about 40 different antivirus scanners to scan your file which is why i like to use it but the only one that picked up the trojan was "jiangmin antivirus" I will try downloading a newer version of vlc player and scan it to see what happens. Thanks for the advice.

One other thought. After you get your system clean and the way you want it - make some kind of backup. I use Norton Ghost and keep the image on an external HD. Then if something "happens" you can just put the ghost image back on. Keep in mind that the image is frozen in time. You will need to reupdate from when that image was made. I make frequent images and delete the older ones on a running basis. Keeping important data on a flash drive is also a good idea so you don't lose pictures, etc.
