Explorer consistantly stops during file transfer

I'm running windows 7 home premium. I'm trying to copy all my old tv episodes to my new pc via data dvds. the dvds are cheap so an episode or two on each disk is corrupt. Every time it tries to transfer one of those files over the download bar turns red and the transfer freezes. If I try to cancel the transfer or kill the process explorer will restart. is there a fix for this? or is this normal windows behavior?
