It has come to my attention that several "Charities" have popped up with the stated goal of gathering funds to clean up the mess from the BP oil spill in the gulf. BP is responsible for this task, and they are responsible for all cleanup costs. If you give to one of these charities, here is what will happen to your money:

1.) The "Charity" you gave to will spend the money on cleanups, and then charge BP for their work.
2.) The "Charity" will spend money on the cleanups, thus doing BP's job for them...for free.

If you want to give, that is great...but give to a cause that helps people who need it; you are already giving enough to BP every time you fill your tank...they are not a charity case. You might as well donate money to help feed Bill Gates. Also do not give your time...this spill means a lot of jobs to people who desperately need the work...especially now that their tourist & fishing industries are destroyed. Cleaning up birds on the beach may not be the greatest job in the world, but it puts food in the mouths of children. If you do this for free, you are hurting the locals, and the only people you help are the people at BP that caused this whole mess to begin with.

In short...giving to those who need it = good. Giving to a soulless international corporation who makes their money by destroying the earth = bad.

Their ads here in the states claim the BP stands for "Better Petroleum"...or rather, the ads that they were running right before the explosion claimed that.

They are still british petroleum...a lot of oil companies split operations between countries for various legal, tax, and logistical reasons...but they are the same company.
